The word is not otherwise attested but appears repeatedly in the water-bailiff’s accounts of Southampton. The definition was provided by the text’s editor; see Port Bks 4.n1, as well as Paul Studer, ‘Étude sur quelques vocables anglo-normands’, Modern Language Review 6 (1911) 174-82 (p. 179).
