reinette (s.xiiiex)

The form renette is a cross reference to the following entry:

reinette (s.xiiiex)

renette,  reynette;  roynet
FEW:  regina 10,212a Gdf:  roinette 7,226a GdfC: TL: roïnete 8,1416 DEAF:  roïne (roïnete)  DMF:  reinette  TLF: OED:  reinette n.  / rennet n.2  MED:  renette n.  DMLBS:

Other dictionaries do not attest the sense of ‘meadow-sweet’ for the diminutive of reine1 though the DMLBS attests to this sense under reginella (2720b). The term was also used to designate a type of apple in the 16th century in both French and English (Cotgrave 1611, Renette ‘Game at Tables of some resemblance with our Doublets, or Queenes Game; also, the apple called a Pippin or a kind thereof; see OED rennet n.2; and reinette n.). The Test Ebor citation suggests earlier currency of the sense in Anglo-Norman.
