quinquefoille (s.xii2)

The form quinkefoil is a cross reference to the following entry:

quinquefoille (s.xii2)

quinkefoil,  quinkfoile,  quinquefoil
FEW:  quinquefolium 2/ii,1481a Gdf: GdfC: TL: DEAF:  quintefueille (quinquefoille)  DMF: TLF: OED:  quinquefoil n. and a.  MED: DMLBS:  quinquefolium 2633c
ls(loanword: compound with Latin)
le

Just like cincfoille and quintefoille the word derives from Latin quinquefolium (with quinquefoille and quintefoille preserving a Latinate form of the ordinal and cardinal numerals) and basically has the same meaning. FEW, OED and DMLBS treat these as the same word (with the FEW merely acknowledging a ‘von quintus beeinflussten form’), but the forms are sufficiently different to warrant separate articles in the AND).
