[romanzi] (s.xiii3/4)

The form rumanzi is a cross reference to the following entry:

[romanzi] (s.xiii3/4)

rumanzi
FEW:  romanice *10,453b Gdf: GdfC: TL: DEAF:  romanz (*)  DMF: TLF: OED: MED: DMLBS:

This hapax is peculiar in form, and could possibly be interpreted as an otherwise unattested nominal use of the past participle of romancer as an -ir verb. It provides also a rare instance where a word of the roman- root is used to refer to a vernacular that is not French or even a Romance language, but, in its Biblical context, to Hebrew (Psalm 114:1).

s.

lang.one who speaks the vernacular
( s.xiii3/4; MS: s.xiii3/4 )  Barbarus ebreus gallice rumanzi, ut Ps. [113] De populo barbaro  Dictionnaire hébreu 130.55
