rachier (1171-74)

[gdw]

[ FEW: 10,35a rakk-; Gdf: 9,238a crachier (raquer); GdfC: ; TL: 8,134 rachier 2; DEAF: ; DMF:  racher 1; TLF: ; OED:  reach v.2 / retch v.2; MED:  hraecen v.; DMLBS: ]
raker

It is unclear whether the verb derives from a Gallo-Romance etymon (krakk-, cf. FEW) or a Germanic one (a-hræcen, cf. OED reach v.2 etymology, Third Edition, 2008). In the latter case, the semantic overlap and formal similarity with cracher would be coincidental, and Godefroy’s decision to treat raquer as a variant spelling of cracher would be erroneous.
