Rather than a contracted form of pé de polein (see sub 1), this lexeme represents Latin pes pulli (lit. ‘foot of a young animal’). However, as plant-names, pépol and pé de polein are largely synonymous and reflect the same botanical ambiguity already present in Latin pes pulli.
