In the absence of a more informative context, the word remains difficult to interpret both in Latin and in Anglo-Norman, and different dictionaries have offered different suggestions. Although witness to a different etymology, the term trefoier must be considered synonymous (glossing the same Latin word and original text). It must be noted that in its single attestation that word is also provided with a Latin definition which seems to favour the ‘fire-poker’ translation.

s.

domesticimplementobject or implement to bank a fire or damp it down (variously interpreted as a large log of wood, andiron or fire-poker)
