While most cognate dictionaries consider the word to be an adjectival derivative of the name Reims (France), the Cloth lexis project, rencian. sub rencian, picks up on the DMLBS etymological suggestion that the word may be an aphetic form of orange (via Italian arancia), and referred to an orange-coloured cloth.
