quartel (1428)

cartel
FEW:  quartus 2/ii,1423b Gdf:  cartel 1,789c GdfC: TL: DEAF: DMF:  cartel  TLF: OED: MED: DMLBS:  cartallus 290c / quartellus 2618c

The word is possibly a conflation of (or the result of a contamination between) quartellus (the diminutive of quartus, meaning ‘a small quarter’) and cartallus (derived from Greek κάρταλλος, meaning ‘basket, creel’).

The decision in AND2, sub C-, to reject cartel and to consider it a misreading of cassel seems unnecessary.
