quartel (1428)

[ gdw]

[ FEW: 2/ii,1423b quartus; Gdf: 1,789c cartel; GdfC: ; TL: ; DEAF: ; DMF:  cartel; TLF: ; OED: ; MED: ; DMLBS: 290c cartallus /2618c quartellus ]
cartel

The word is possibly a conflation of (or the result of a contamination between) quartellus (the diminutive of quartus, meaning ‘a small quarter’) and cartallus (derived from Greek κάρταλλος, meaning ‘basket, creel’).

The decision in AND2, sub C-, to reject cartel and to consider it a misreading of cassel seems unnecessary.
