quariie (s.xiii)

The form quara is a cross reference to the following entry:

quariie (s.xiii)

quara
FEW:  quadrus *2/ii,1400b Gdf: GdfC: TL: DEAF: DMF: TLF: OED:  quar n.1  / quarry n.2  MED:  quar n.  / quarrei n.  DMLBS:  quarrarius 2616b / quarria 2617b
ls(loanword: M.E. (?))
le

This form, with elision of the unstressed syllable of quarraria, is also found in medieval Latin and Middle English and becomes the standard English word. It is rare in Anglo-Norman (as a synonym of quarrere) and appears only in these two glosses. It is unclear whether this instance of syncope is a genuine Anglo-Norman process, or whether the word is a borrowing from Middle English (or, as the OED suggests, even a scribal error, perhaps through the omission of an -er- abbreviation symbol).
