This word, which in the case of the Mir Just citation almost seems to be an ad hoc creation rather than a proper legal term, has a different sense in Anglo-Norman than in Continental French (‘pénible, difficile à supporter’). However, the corresponding adverb in Anglo-Norman, penablement, seems to use that sense.
