oriol1 (s.xii2)

The form auriol is a cross reference to the following entry:

oriol1 (s.xii2)

auriol,  oriel,  oriole  (orkoil)
FEW:  aureolus 25,963b Gdf:  oriel 1 5,636c / oriol 1 5,693b GdfC: TL: orïol 1 6,1283 DEAF:  orïol 1  DMF:  oriol 1  TLF:  loriot 1 (oriol)  OED:  oriole n.  MED: DMLBS:  aureolus 162c

Surprisingly, this word, well-attested in Anglo-Norman and medieval Latin, first appears in English only in the eighteenth century.

The use of the word with reference to a type of fish is not attested in Continental French, but its validity is confirmed by the DMLBS sub aureolus 162c (sense 2: ‘kind of fish, gilt-head’). Confusingly, however, according to the DMLBS the Latin word which it glosses, phicedula, means only a ‘small bird’, possibly the ‘fig-pecker’ (sub ficedula, 935a).
