The DMLBS tentatively associates the word with Latin TAPES (DMLBS 3371c, ‘piece of fabric’, ‘coverlet’, ‘carpet’, ‘tapestry’, etc.), and consequently the tapit1 word family, but other than that, its etymology and formation remain obscure. The Anglo-Norman Winchester2 citations leave some ambiguity as to whether the noun is agential or a nominalized infinitive, but the equivalent uses in English and Latin support the former.
