While the edition suggests the term is a gloss on the Latin maritari, perhaps a figurative use of the verb maritare (DMLBS 1724b ‘to marry’), in the sense of ‘to join together’, the form of the word and the sense of the text suggests that the verb shares a semantic link (and possibly an etymological one) with roer³, ‘to rotate, move round’ and was perhaps intended to gloss evolvendus. The DEAFpré defines the word as ‘battre?’ (based on AND1’s now rejected definition of ‘to stroke, graze’) but provides no possible etymon.
