Hunt in TLL i 21, n.21 notes that, "Cespitare means to stumble (hence cadere), occasionally to dig, the noun cespes indicating a sod or mass of roots, and thus ‘reier’ may be a reflex of (e)radicare, cf. FEW 10,18a."
