putel (s.xii2/4)

[ gdw]

[ FEW: 9,634a putidus; Gdf: 6,472c putel; GdfC: ; TL: 7,2112 putel 2; DEAF:  put (putel); DMF:  putea  / putel; TLF: ; OED: ; MED: ; DMLBS: 2588b puteal ]

Alternatively (and particularly in the case of the Horn citation), the word may also be considered a diminutive of puz1 (from puteus), cf. DMLBS puteolis ‘a (small) well, or pit’ (2588b). However, the editor of S Edm Life ants rejects this etymology (p. 230).
