poigner1 (1141)

[ gdw]

[ FEW: 9,513b pugnare; Gdf: 6,249b poignier 2; GdfC: ; TL: 7,2083 poignier; DEAF:  poignier; DMF:  poignier; TLF: ; OED:  pugne v.; MED:  pugnen v.; DMLBS: 2565c pugnare ]
poignier;  poiner,  poinner,  ponner,  poyner;  puigner

Some verbal forms overlap with poindre1 (‘to prick’, but also ‘to spur a horse’), and confusion between the two verbs may have been possible. In addition, further association of the verb with poin1 (‘fist’) (cf. commentary sub poigneis) may make it difficult, at times, to distinguish it completely from poiner1.
