The etymological discussion provided in the relevant OED and the FEW articles (see also R. Arveiller, Addenda au FEW XIX, Tübingen: Niemeyer, 1999, pp. 418-421) suggests that nakaire may also be related to Afr. nacre (GdfC 10,189b) ‘mother-of-pearl’ though the semantic link between these words is unclear. Nacre is currently unattested in Anglo-Norman, though the entry naisel may represent a variant form.
