sursegle (c.1185)

FEW: Gdf: GdfC: TL: DEAF: DMF: TLF: OED: MED: DMLBS:

The variant reading grisein refers to a type of grey cloth (cf. grisain), which suggests that sursegle may also be a type of material. However, the word is not found in any cognate dictionaries, and its etymology remains unclear. The latter half, segle, may have some relation with either sengle1 (‘single, unlined’) or cengle1 (‘belt, girdle’).
