recercelement (1266-1300)

[gdw]

[ FEW: *2/i,699b circellus; Gdf: ; GdfC: ; TL: ; DEAF:  cercel (*); DMF: ; TLF: ; OED: ; MED: ; DMLBS: ]

The editor of Secr Waterford1 suggests that this hapax is a derivative of circellus, albeit used with a sense that is not attested elsewhere in the group. She believes that the term derives from a misreading of Latin oscitatio (‘yawning’) as oscilatio (‘swinging’), resulting in what must have been a nonsense translation into Anglo-Norman. The word appears to be synonymous with rebundance (which is equally problematic) and has been defined accordingly.
