[gdw]
The editor of Secr Waterford1 suggests that this hapax is a derivative of circellus, albeit used with a sense that is not attested elsewhere in the group. She believes that the term derives from a misreading of Latin oscitatio (‘yawning’) as oscilatio (‘swinging’), resulting in what must have been a nonsense translation into Anglo-Norman. The word appears to be synonymous with rebundance (which is equally problematic) and has been defined accordingly.
