ratte

The word normally refers to the spleen, and is still used as such in Modern French. However, the Middle English glosses suggest that in its Anglo-Norman use the word refers to the midriff or diaphragm (MED mid-rid(e n. and miggern n.). This ambiguity is hard to resolve, and the MED allows in both entries for the interpretation ‘?also, the spleen’.
