ptisicle (s.xiii2/4)

[ gdw]

[ FEW: *8,404a phthisicus; Gdf: ; GdfC: ; TL: ; DEAF:  ptisique (*); DMF: ; TLF: ; OED:  phthisical a. and n.; MED: ; DMLBS: ]

The unetymological -cle ending is difficult to explain. While a relation with English adjective phthisical seems possible, that form (explained by the OED as an English derivation, either though phthisic with the -al suffix or through phthisis followed by the -ical suffix) only appears from the early seventeenth century.
