While most dictionaries interpret this word is a diminutive form of place, TL defines it as ‘schlecter Flecken im Pelzwerk’ and relates it to the adjectival form plaços (7,1005) ‘kahlköpfig (stellenweise)’ which is attested in AN as placheus.
