The word is derived from post-classical Latin nugalis (not attested in the DMLBS), which is an adjectival form of nugae (DMLBS 1946b), i.e. ‘something of little or no consequence, trifle’. In French, however, the word retains a comparative/superlative sense; see also noallur.
