turiger (s.xiii3/4)

[dd]

[FEW: *13/i,317a thurificare; Gdf: 7,707b thurifier; GdfC: ; TL: ; DEAF: ; DMF:  thurifier; TLF: ; OED: ; MED: ; DMLBS: 3529b turificare]

The Latin thurificare normally produced turifier. The evolution of the Latin verbs ending in -ficare to -iger in Anglo-Norman seems to be specific to the Jewish community (See Blondheim, D. S. (1925). Les Parlers judéo-romans et la Vetus Latina: Étude sur les rapports entre les traductions bibliques en langue romane des Juifs au Moyen Âge et les anciennes versions. United Kingdom: Cambridge University Press. p.128; Livingston, C. H. (1942). ‘Etymologies of Old French Reechier and English Rack’. Modern Language Notes, 57(8), 631–638, p.633).
