tritevele (s.xiiiin)

The form tretevele is a cross reference to the following entry:

tritevele (s.xiiiin)

tretevele;  tristewel,  tristewell,  tristwel;  tritevel;  trustwell
FEW:  triste *17,369a Gdf: GdfC: TL: DEAF: DMF: TLF: OED: MED: DMLBS:

The origins of this word are obscure. It may be related to Anglo-Norman tristre1, ‘hunting station, appointed place where a hunter awaits the game’, and compound of Anglo-Norman tristre and Middle English ivel ‘evil’ (MED ivel a.). On the semantic link between the hellhounds and the S Clem example, see S Clem ants iii 106.11462.n.
