The Anglo-Norman forms may directly derive from medieval Latin tollum, attested since the 11th century into the British Isles (see DMLBS tollum). However, earliest Anglo-Norman attestations in the phrase tol and tem, present in Old English charters since the early 11th century (see team n. sense III.8.b. ), suggest possible borrowing from English into Anglo-Norman. Examples deriving from Late Latin toloneum (from CL teloneum) have been separated into the entry tolnu.
