When used as a gloss to Latin sudes, the word suer which normally means ‘pig’ must be interpreted as ‘pigsty’. This suggests a derivation from different etymology: not from sus (‘pig’), but from its adjectival derivative suarius (‘of or pertaining to swine’). When used nominally, the Latin word can mean ‘place where swine are kept’ (see DMLBS 3223a).
