[ FEW: 11,268b scala; Gdf: ; GdfC: ; TL: ; DEAF: ; DMF: ; TLF: ; OED:  scale n.3 / scale n.4; MED:  scale n.2 / scale n.3; DMLBS: 2950a scala 1 /2950c scala 4 ]

M.E. (?)

The sense of the word in the 1400-01 account is unclear nad might refer not to a 'ladder', but rather a 'hut, hovel, shed' (MED scale n.2, from Old Norse skali). The 1417-18 attestation refers more unequivocally to a ladder.
