rosegras (s.xv2)

[gdw]

[ FEW: ; Gdf: ; GdfC: ; TL: ; DEAF: ; DMF: ; TLF: ; OED: ; MED: ; DMLBS: ]

M.E.

The same word is used as a Middle English gloss (‘anglice’) for the Latin plant name antifarmacum, i.e. ‘columbine’ (Plant Names 26-27). The term is presumably English, and the ‘gallice’ tag is used erroneously in the sole fifteenth-century manuscript. In spite of that, the term is absent from the OED and MED. The associations with ros1 (‘reed’) and rose1 (‘rose’) are provisional.
