robouse (1370)

[gdw]

[ FEW: ; Gdf: ; GdfC: ; TL: ; DEAF:  robouse; DMF: ; TLF: ; OED:  rubbish n. , a. and int.; MED:  robous n.; DMLBS: 2846b robousa ]
robous,  robuse;  rubbouse,  rubous,  robise,  roboise

The OED’s etymological commentary notes the uncertain origin of the word, and questions a possible association with reburrus (cf. AND entry reburs). Even though the Latin and Anglo-Norman cognates are earlier than the English term, the OED suggests that the word, not attested in Continental French, may be English in origin.
