The OED’s etymological commentary notes the uncertain origin of the word, and questions a possible association with reburrus (cf. AND entry reburs). Even though the Latin and Anglo-Norman cognates are earlier than the English term, the OED suggests that the word, not attested in Continental French, may be English in origin.
