This rare verb can be interpreted either as a prefixed form of cesser1 (from cessare, ‘to cease’) (cf. FEW cessare and DEAF) or, in analogy with recesse, as a verbal derivative of recessus, i.e. the past participle stem of recedere (cf. OED recess v.1).
