rebucher (s.xii2)

The form reboucher is a cross reference to the following entry:

rebucher (s.xii2)

rebocher;  reboucher,  rebouchier;  rebuchier,  rebuker
FEW:  bucca 1,583b Gdf: GdfC:  rebouchier 1 10,494a TL: reboissier 8,376 DEAF:  reboissier  DMF:  reboucher 2  TLF: OED: MED: DMLBS:

The verb may have been confused with rebuker1 (‘to rebuke’), which is both formally and semantically close, but derives from a different etymology (*busk, ‘bush’, as a verbal derivative in the sense of ‘to hit, strike’).

The DMF questions the bucca etymology (‘Etymol. douteuse’), and suggests an association with reburrus, FEW 10,137a (‘with bristling hair’), cf. AND reburs and DMF rebrois.
