prun (s.xiii1)

prun (s.xiii1)

FEW:  pruna *9,491b Gdf: GdfC: TL: DEAF: DMF: TLF: OED: MED: DMLBS:  pruna1 1234a

It is possible that the glosser mistook prunis (ablative plural of pruna ‘live coal’) for prunus ‘plum-tree’. The FEW notes that derivations from pruna are very rare and no others are extant from the medieval period.

s.

coal, charcoal, fuel prepared from organic matter, especially wood
( MS: s.xiii1 )  prunis carbonum: pru[n]s, carbun, bresis  TLL ii 99.67
