pounce (1410-11)

[ gdw]

[ FEW: *9,582b *punctiare; Gdf: ; GdfC: ; TL: ; DEAF:  pounce; DMF: ; TLF: ; OED:  pounce n.1; MED:  pounce n.1; DMLBS: ]

As the OED suggest, this word is presumably a shortened form of pounçon, not attested in Continental French. Attestations in Middle English are more frequent and earlier than this single Anglo-Norman usage, which may indicate that the shortening was originally an English phenomenon.
