purçant (1272-82)

The form porçant is a cross reference to the following entry:

purçant (1272-82)

porçant,  porcint,  procint,  purcint,  pursain
FEW: Gdf: GdfC: TL: DEAF: DMF: TLF: OED: MED: DMLBS:

For reasons that remain unclear, the Anglo-Norman falconry texts have a manuscript tradition of referring to the preen gland using variants of the term purçant. It is believed that the forms may be derived from a misreading of puroint; in which case, the ‘c’ would be unetymological. Tilander (Romania 56, 267-75) notes the substitution, but offers no explanation for it.
