The editor of Port Bks suggests the word is a diminutive of point1 (cf. P. Studer, ‘Étude sur quelques vocables anglo-normands’, Modern Language Review 6 (1911) 174-82 (p. 180). MED includes this sense sub pointel, and also DEAF currently arrange the word sub point. However, the etymology remains unclear.
