pelestre (s.xii2)

Entry Log

Clear

The form perestre is a cross reference to the following entry:

pelestre (s.xii2)

pelectre;  peletere,  peletre,  peletree,  pelettre,  peleystre;  pelitre,  pellestre,  pelletere,  pellettre  (pelitrion  Five Med MSS 163.E496 perestre  Plant Names 237)
FEW:  pyrethum 9,648b Gdf:  pelestre 1 6,67c GdfC: TL: pelestre 7,592 DEAF:  pelestre  DMF:  pelestre  TLF: OED:  pelleter n.2  MED:  peltre n.  DMLBS:  pelestricum 2168c

According to the OED, Classical Latin pyrethrum (producing piretre, pelestre and petre1) and Medieval Latin parietaria (producing peritorie) became confused early, resulting in a semantic overlap between the two word-families. However, the association with ‘creeping thyme’, suggested by thirteenth-century glosses and also attested for petre1, remains unclear.
