This substantival derivative of peindre1 is otherwise not attested in Anglo-Norman or French. It appears in Medieval English from the late thirteenth century, albeit only in compounds (peintmaker and peintseld) , which makes this is the earliest attestation of the term as a single lexeme (datable to ca.1308-20) – considerable earlier than in English (1612).
