peestre (1194-99)

[gdw]

FEW:  pedester 8,120b Gdf: GdfC:  peestre 10,304a TL: pëestre 7,547 DEAF:  peestre  DMF:  peestre  TLF:  piètre  OED: MED: DMLBS:  pedester 2164c

In its sole attestation the word apears in the manuscript as peestre with the first e expuncted and replaced by an r inserted above the line. The editors of ambroise reject the resulting prestre and replace it by paestre - a term which they translate as an otherwise unattested derivative of the paen ('pagan') group. The original manuscript reading is probably the best, and the word is listed here as such.
