The suggested etymology of orpin is that it is a condensed form of orpiment (literally ‘gold pigment’). Whereas in Anglo-Norman the two words seem to have developed with their two possible senses entirely separate, the two can be found combined in the respective orpin entries of FEW, TLF, TL and OED.
