The word is a substantival use of the present participle of nuiter.

Instances of la nuitant may well be read as l’anuitant (cf. the commentary to nuitance), and the S Edm citation appears in both TL and AND2 as the only attestation of the word anuitant. Ultimately, the word nuitant is better attested than the word anuitant.

The adjective may also be interpreted as a variant of nuitun.
