noces (1121-35)

[ gdw]

[ FEW: 7,243a nuptiae; Gdf: ; GdfC: 10,204c noce; TL: 6,685 noce; DEAF:  noce; DMF:  noce; TLF:  noce; OED:  noces n.; MED:  neoces n.; DMLBS: 1955a nuptiae ]
noches,  noeces,  nosces,  noesces;  neces,  neoces,  nuces;
sg. noce,  noece

As in Latin (nuptiae), the word is generally used in its plural form, but is frequently treated as a singular noun: both ‘les noces’ and ‘la noces’ are attested. The use of the pure singular form (‘la noce’) is exceptional, and is consequently listed here in second place (and, in contrast to the DMF, Gdf and TL’s treatment of it, not as the entry’s headword).
