ussier (c.1136-37)

The form husher is a cross reference to the following entry:

ussier (c.1136-37)

huisser,  huissher,  huisshier,  huissier;  husher,  husier,  husser,  hussher,  hussier;  oisser,  oisseur,  ousser;  uisser,  uissier;  uscher,  usher,  usier;  usscher,  usser,  ussher,  usshier;  uysser  (hyssher  Bristol Red Bk 13)
  FEW:  ostium 7,438 Gdf:  huissier 1 4,525b / huissier 2 4,525b / huissier 3 4,525b GdfC:  huissier 9,773c TL: uissier 11,27 DEAF:  uis (uissier)  DMF:  huissier 1  / huissier 2  TLF:  huissier  OED:  huissier n.  / usher n.  MED:  usher n.  DMLBS:  ostiarius 2066a

In Horn 3638 (var.), ‘Kar pur li oreinz fu un usser enveez’, the editor glosses the word as ‘messenger’. Although appropriate in this context, the word does not really have that sense, and it is therefore not incorporated in this entry. Rather, it indicates that one of the functions of a doorkeeper or porter was to convey messages.
