Originally the AND interpreted this word as a p.p. form of engarer, and the citation was included sub esgarer with the sense of 'to deceive, lead astray'. The editors of Aelfric gloss point out this error, and suggest an association with the *warnjan word group (cf. garnir¹, albeit with an unusual denasalization.
