Just like quintefoille and quinquefoille, the word derives from Latin quinquefolium and basically has the same meaning. FEW, OED and DMLBS treat these as the same word, but the use of vernacular vs. Latinate numerals makes the forms sufficiently different to warrant separate articles in the AND.
