aloigner1 (1190-93)

The form aligner2 is a cross reference to the following entry:

aloigner1 (1190-93)

alloigner,  alloyner;  aloingner,  aloiner,  aloinner;  alongier,  alongnir;  aloygner,  aloyngner,  aloynner;  aluigner,  aluiner,  aluingner;  alungner;  aluyner  (aligner,  aloisner,  alounner  BOZ Serm 42.164 alligner ),
(sbj.3 alwyne)
FEW:  longe 5,404b Gdf:  aloignier 1,233a GdfC: TL: aloignier 3,312 DEAF:  loing (aloignier)  DMF:  aloigner  TLF: OED:  aloyn v.  MED:  aloinen v.  DMLBS:  ablongare 6a

Derivatives of the adjectives lung (‘long’, from Latin longus) and luin (‘far’, from Latin longe – with the adverbial form producing a diphthongization of the root vowel) are separated on etymological and semantic grounds. However, the overlap of spelling variants (with or wihtout the diphthonization) between the two groups suggests no firm distinction between them.
